Voivod: The Nuclear Warrior Demo Is Live at Steam Next Fest 2026
Voivod’s free demo is live at Steam Next Fest
As of Tuesday, October 20, 2026, the official Steam listing for Voivod: The Nuclear Warrior displays an option to download its free demo. Steam Next Fest opened on Monday, October 19 and runs through October 26, making this an opportunity to try the run-and-gun Metroidvania from Chaosmonger Studio, founded by Italian developer Nicola Piovesan. The project turns the Canadian metal band Voivod’s dystopian sci-fi imagery into a new pixel-art adventure built around mutation, combat and exploration. An October 15 statement from the studio confirms two demo paths, Story Path and Combat Trial; the download option was checked directly on Steam on October 20.

An Italian creator working across borders
Chaosmonger Studio is currently based in Tallinn, Estonia, yet its roots reach back to Bologna, Italy. On its official website, the studio identifies filmmaker and game developer Nicola Piovesan as its founder. Its catalogue spans film, animation and interactive projects including the adventure ENCODYA and the humorous Metroidvania Clunky Hero. That makes Voivod: The Nuclear Warrior relevant to a roundup of Italian indie creators without pretending it is an entirely Italy-based production. It is an international project led by an Italian creative whose experience with cinematic storytelling helps explain the emphasis on atmosphere and visual identity.

Fragments of memory in a mutating wasteland
The player controls the Voivod, a warrior transformed by nuclear devastation. His body keeps mutating, while his shattered consciousness struggles to reconstruct the past. A mysterious disembodied presence named Nothingface guides him through ruined landscapes, cybernetic fortresses and dimensions that seem to fold in on themselves. Exploring connected spaces and unlocking abilities evokes the Metroidvania tradition. Yet the experience also promises direct run-and-gun combat against biomechanical enemies and oversized bosses. The central tension is between recovering a lost identity and surviving an environment designed to interrupt that search with dangerous encounters.

Two demo modes for two kinds of players
According to Chaosmonger’s announcement, the Steam Next Fest demo offers Story Path and Combat Trial. Story Path follows the opening sequence of the main adventure for roughly an hour, gradually introducing locations, narrative details, equipment and abilities. Combat Trial is a more concentrated challenge: it offers a broader selection of weapons and powers from the outset, emphasizing enemy encounters and a demanding boss fight. These are useful options for an early public showcase because some players want to assess the world and pacing, while others want to test combat responsiveness. The final available build and download window must still be checked on Steam rather than inferred from earlier press previews.

The band helped shape the game
The official Steam listing describes direct participation from Voivod’s musicians. Michel Langevin, known as Away, contributes to the visual design and artwork. Daniel Mongrain, or Chewy, supervises the adaptation of the band’s music into a retro-game sound. Denis Bélanger, known as Snake, lends his voice to the protagonist, while Dominic Laroche, or Rocky, provides playtesting feedback. The band publicly introduced the project on its own website in March 2025. That involvement gives the adaptation more substance than simply applying an established music logo to an unrelated action game: the material informs its creatures, environments, sound and storytelling.

What is the full game’s release window?
Steam currently lists Q1 2027 for the complete game. The developer also discusses an early-2027 PC and console launch plan, but no platform-by-platform release date should be treated as final. Windows, macOS and Linux are listed for the PC release, and the studio has discussed work on Steam Deck performance. The concrete occasion for coverage today is the October 19–26 Steam Next Fest showcase, not a full commercial release. The features described here are based on official developer information and should not be mistaken for hands-on impressions.
A separate kind of collectible storytelling: Smart GFX and The Signal
Music, illustration, game worlds and collectible art can share creative ideas without sharing a license. The Signal by Smart GFX explores a separate, independent fictional universe through digital cards, digital collectible coins, streetwear, canvas artwork, framed paper prints and aluminum prints. Current examples include THE SIGNAL digital cards; THE SIGNAL digital coins; a Smart GFX hoodie; the ORIGIN // 01 canvas; an ORIGIN framed paper print; an ORIGIN aluminum print. These are independent Smart GFX products, NOT official merchandise or collaborations with Voivod, Chaosmonger Studio or Valve. The comparison is editorial only.
