Madoka Magica: Walpurgisnacht Rising Is Now in Japanese Theaters
Since August 28, 2026, the new Puella Magi Madoka Magica movie has been playing in Japanese theaters. Walpurgisnacht: Rising is not a recap or remake: the official site presents it as the canonical sequel to Rebellion, the 2013 film.
A return thirteen years in the making
The August 28 Japanese release closes a very long wait for a direct continuation of Rebellion. For now, confirmed distribution covers Japanese cinemas. No official theatrical dates for Italy, Germany or other international markets had been announced at publication time, and no streaming platform had been confirmed.
That distinction matters: the Japanese theatrical release is verified, while an international launch is a reasonable possibility for a title of this scale but not yet a confirmed fact.
What the official synopsis says
Without going beyond production materials, the film returns to the world rebuilt after Rebellion. Homura rules this reality as a demon, while new phenomena disrupt the magical girls’ daily lives: a voice connected to the so-called Lizard-san Phone, unusual attacks and figures determined to bring an end to the distorted world.
The official synopsis also links Walpurgisnacht to two magical girls searching for the Law of Cycles. Promotional text points toward a conflict with Homura, but does not fully explain the nature of the new figures, so anything beyond that remains interpretation.
The historic creative team remains at the center
The new film reunites the creative figures who defined the series. Akiyuki Shinbo serves as chief director, Gen Urobuchi writes the screenplay, Ume Aoki provides original character concepts and Yukihiro Miyamoto directs. Junichiro Taniguchi is character designer and chief animation director, with SHAFT handling animation.
The core team also includes Gekidan Inu Curry (Doroinu) for alternate spaces, Tomohiro Furukawa for storyboard and visual concept, Takayuki Aizu for photography, Rie Matsubara for editing and Yuki Kajiura for music. This is genuine production continuity, not simply a nostalgic callback.
The returning cast
The official site confirms Aoi Yuki as Madoka Kaname, Chiwa Saito as Homura Akemi, Eri Kitamura as Sayaka Miki, Ai Nonaka as Kyoko Sakura, Kaori Mizuhashi as Mami Tomoe, Kana Asumi as Nagisa Momoe and Emiri Kato as Kyubey. Newly announced voices also include Shion Wakayama and Tomoyo Kurosawa.
The return of the main cast reinforces continuity with earlier chapters, but official materials do not yet define every character’s screen time or fully explain all of the new identities.

Until Aniplex or regional partners announce those details, August 28 should be treated strictly as the Japanese release date.
