Phoenix Cyclops joins the roster of MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls on November 2, 2026. As the first additional character in the Year 1 Pass, he offers much more than a costume change: Arc System Works has created a fighter who alternates between space control with Optic Blasts and the unstable power of the Phoenix Force.

Release date, platforms and PlayStation Plus trial

The announcement appeared on the PlayStation Blog on October 7. Phoenix Cyclops will be available November 2 on PS5 and PC, where MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls is sold through Steam and the Epic Games Store. The Classic and Legacy DLC outfits also arrive on the same day.

For those who do not yet own the game, PlayStation Plus subscribers have been able to access a three-hour trial since October 7. It is an opportunity to try the four-versus-four combat system before the new character arrives. The PlayStation Store has also launched the title's first promotion.

Optic Blasts, Solar Shards and Dark Phoenix

Phoenix Cyclops is designed as an all-rounder. He can keep opponents at range with several Optic Blast variants, but also has close-range attacks, advancing moves, throws and setup tools. Attacks powered by the Phoenix Force cover large sections of the screen and force opponents to manage spacing carefully.

Using Optic Blasts builds up Solar Shards. Once Cyclops accumulates four shards, he can transform into Dark Phoenix and gain a substantial temporary power boost. There is a trade-off: this form drains health, so transformation requires good timing rather than acting as a free upgrade.

Why Phoenix Cyclops?

Producer Takeshi Yamanaka explained that Cyclops had been a leading candidate from the early stages of development. However, the character already has a long history in Marvel fighting games. The team therefore chose the Avengers vs. X-Men version to offer a different silhouette, visual effects and mechanics from more traditional incarnations.

The tension between leadership and corruption appears in the design as well: the outfit retains references to the comics, while the transformation dramatizes a loss of control. Players who prefer the classic iconography can choose the more familiar Classic and Legacy costumes.

An early playable debut at EVO France

Before the digital release, Phoenix Cyclops will be playable at the MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls booth at EVO France from October 9 to 11. It will be the first public test of how Solar Shard management and the risks of Dark Phoenix might affect team composition.
