A sports resort built around motion controls

Nintendo published a new Nintendo Switch Sports Resort overview on October 16. Launching October 22, 2026 exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2, the game moves the series to Wuhu Island and brings together 12 motion-controlled sports, solo play, same-system multiplayer, and online competition.

This is more than a straightforward update to the previous entry. The island acts as a shared framework linking sports, exploration, progression, and customization. Players can step onto the resort as either a Sportsmate or a Mii character.

Overview of the sports available in Nintendo Switch Sports Resort

Twelve events, including two new sports

Thumb Wrestling and Skateboarding are the brand-new additions. Thumb Wrestling asks players to pin an opponent's thumb for three seconds, while holding their own thumb down makes it bigger and stronger. Skateboarding uses Joy-Con 2 in mouse mode for grinds, slides, and aerial tricks.

Power Cruising, Archery, Bowling, Table Tennis, Boxing, Prop Plane, Tennis, Volleyball, Basketball, and Golf return. Each event interprets the controllers differently: players can twist for bowling spin, account for wind while aiming a bow, or tilt the controller to fly and accelerate.

Four players locally, online lobbies, and Pro League

Up to four people can play on one system. The official product page lists two to 16 players online overall; private Friend Lobbies support up to eight players, with a maximum of two people on each system. GameChat is also supported for conversation and reactions during sessions.

Casual Online Play offers low-pressure matches across nine sports. Pro League instead matches competitors at a similar skill level and tracks the climb through ranked play. Nintendo Account and Nintendo Switch Online are required for online features, while GameChat video requires a compatible USB camera.

Island Crown gives solo players structured progression

Island Crown is primarily focused on solo play. Across nine sports, players challenge Island Champions and Island Legends, including the formidable Mii Matt. Wins award customization options and Spocco Points, creating a clearer progression path.

That structure gives players who do not want to compete online a reason to keep returning. Learning movements, facing stronger opponents, and unlocking rewards turns the resort into a connected experience rather than a loose collection of minigames.

Explore Wuhu Island by land, sea, and air

Wuhu Island is not just a background. Players can cross the water with Power Cruising, ride through the resort on a skateboard, or fly over it in a Prop Plane. Sightseeing Tours add missions, landmarks, and collectible Spocco Photos.

This design connects several signature sports directly to discovery. Competition, tourism, and smaller challenges can alternate within the same setting, giving the return to Wuhu Island its own pace and identity.

Sportsmates, Mii characters, and cosmetic collections

Players can use a Sportsmate or Mii and customize hair, clothing, accessories, and body type. Multiple looks can be saved for quick switching, while Spocco Points earned through play unlock more cosmetic options.

The Item Center offers two collections every week alongside new monthly themes. Cosmetic progress remains separate from athletic skill, but it provides a steady incentive to try different events and show a personal style in multiplayer lobbies.
