Beyond These Stars Is Out: Build a City on Space Whale Kewa
Beyond These Stars launched in version 1.0 for PC on October 16, 2026. For Balancing Monkey Games, this is more than the finish line for another city builder: the unusual idea of creating a civilization on the back of Kewa, a gigantic sentient Space Whale, becomes a management system in which logistics and environmental balance cannot be separated.
The official press kit lists October 17 in New Zealand and October 16 in the CST time zone, while Steam records the global release on October 16. Developed in Dunedin, Aotearoa New Zealand, and published by Hooded Horse, the game arrives as a full release rather than an open-ended Early Access promise.
A city that must coexist with Kewa
The premise changes a basic rule of the city-building genre. The land is not a static map: Kewa travels between star systems, has needs and desires of its own, and can decide when it is time to leave a planet. Every district, production chain, and expansion therefore exists on a living being that cannot be treated as a simple stockpile.
The Peeps need homes, jobs, and services, but most of the surface is barren at the beginning. Good planning means working with the shape of the land, adjacency bonuses, and travel times without filling every available space or damaging the ecosystem that makes the colony possible.

Terraforming, forests, and production chains
Players can dig canals, add topsoil, plant trees, and restore entire forests. These are not cosmetic choices: they support farming, the atmosphere, and access to raw materials. As research unlocks more advanced goods, logistics networks, mining infrastructure, and resource demand become more complex.
That creates the central tension. Industry makes the settlement more efficient, but it can also shrink the viable habitat. Sustainable growth means spreading extraction, repairing the land, and deciding whether to bring materials in from other worlds instead of making Kewa absorb every cost.

Outposts, alien species, and a moving horizon
When Kewa reaches a new system, players can establish outposts on nearby planets. They provide scarce resources and reduce pressure on the main settlement, but the opportunity is temporary: without a strong relationship with Kewa, it becomes harder to predict when the journey will continue.
The voyage also brings alien species, extra objectives, trade, and new technologies. The galaxy is procedurally generated, so progress is not only about making one city larger. Players must keep communities and supply lines connected while their home itself keeps moving through space.

Platform, languages, and launch window
Beyond These Stars is currently confirmed for Windows PC and is sold through Steam and the Epic Games Store. Steam lists interface text and subtitles in fifteen languages, including Italian and German; full voice acting is listed only for English.
Steam is offering a 20 percent launch discount through October 30. That commercial offer may vary by region, so the local store remains the source for the final price. None of the official sources checked announces a console version.

Why this release stands out
The distinctive idea is not simply using a whale as scenery, but making the relationship between the city and Kewa mechanical. Production, ecology, movement, and story depend on the same organism. The cost of a decision becomes visible: rapid expansion may help the Peeps today while creating a structural problem tomorrow.
Balancing Monkey Games describes this as its second title after Before We Leave. Development began in 2022 with an independent New Zealand team and support from publisher Hooded Horse. The result is aimed at players who value calm management, interconnected systems, and a less aggressive model of expansion.

What is confirmed—and what is not
The full launch, PC version, studio, publisher, language support, city building, terraforming, outposts, alien trade, and the relationship with Kewa are all confirmed. The official sources do not announce PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo Switch ports, so those versions should not be presented as likely or imminent.
Likewise, a procedural galaxy does not mean multiplayer or co-op. Steam classifies Beyond These Stars as a single-player experience. That distinction matters when describing exactly what version 1.0 offers today.
